Gosh! Have I already completed my first week at Michaela Foundation as Operation’s Assistant?

Wow what a whirlwind, filled with lots of excitement for what lies ahead for me and the charity. Here it goes…a short introduction before JD day 1hoping to meet many of you in person during the summer.

My name is Janine, I was born and grew up in Belfast. As a shy child my mum encouraged me to join dance and drama groups with my two sisters for fun.  I loved Saturday’s at the Rainbow Factory, taking part in dance and drama classes as well as hanging out with friends.  The Rainbow Factory gave me the opportunity to try lots of different forms of dance including Irish, hip hop, jazz and contemporary to name but a few, however nothing gave me as much enjoyment as ballet!

Almost 20 years on I still go to a weekly ballet class as it is part of who I  am and I feel you should always do what you love!  It’s a great way to keep fit and I have made lifelong friends because of it.

Growing up I often found it hard to “get along” with my sisters as we were very close in age and at times needed our own space, however I can honestly say they have become the best friends any girl could wish for, this process did take a while.  I would say to my 13 year old self be patient and accepting of others and celebrate each other’s differences, as this is what makes us unique.

In 2009 I had the opportunity to work for a summer upstate New York at Southwoods Summer Camp.  I was employed for 3 months as a residential Camp Counsellor and Dance Teacher.   I had a fantastic experience and the weather was great, as they say at Southwoods:

“Sun-cream and water could it get any hotter!”

My younger sister Lily first alerted me to the job vacancy at Michaela Foundation as she is registered on the volunteer email list.  I knew it was a fantastic opportunity and didn’t hesitate to forward my CV.  I was interested in the vacancy as I valued the ethos of the foundation and felt I could really contribute to the fantastic work they do and go the “extra mile” as it is not just a job.

I am humbled to be a part of an inspiring charity like Michaela Foundation and lastly I would like to share with you all  a quote from Saint Teresa of Calcutta:

“We can do no great things, only small things with great love”
