A message from a humbled, inspired and appreciative Marathon Match Team

Monday January 9th 2017

Pardon us for the delay in posting, It’s taken us longer than the duration of the Marathon Match to digest the enormity of the event itself. (That, and we’ve been catching up on missed sleep!)

The Marathon Match surpassed all our expectations and hopes. Both Michaela Foundation and Cancer Focus NI are humbled by the support received. There are quite literally hundreds of people, businesses and organisations to thank. We hope to thank each of them personally and/or publicly in due course.

For now we’d like to congratulate the 40 players who pushed themselves far beyond their comfort zone and played Gaelic for a whopping 24 hours and 20 minutes. A feat not to be underestimated! We honestly couldn’t have worked with a nicer group of men. Despite the obvious challenges, both mental and physical, they remained upbeat, full of craic and resolute to playing til the bitter end. They truly emulate our Life WIthout Limits ethos. These lads were inspirational both on and off the field.

Thanks to the physios, masseurs and Order of Malta team who kept our players as pain free as possible and gave them more than just rubs and medical treatment but offered welcome words of encouragement and support.

Over 150 volunteers were involved in the Marathon Match in a wide array of roles. (Managers, referees, umpires, witnesses, catering, refueling and more!) The event would not have been possible without each of these volunteers. They brought an infectious energy which helped our players immensely. Volunteers traveled from far and wide to play a part in the match. We even had referees travel from Mayo and Donegal to volunteer in the early hours. Some volunteers stayed the full 24+ hours!!

Thanks to the spectators who attended the match, supported the players and donated generously. We are so grateful! There were supporters on the sideline throughout the 24 hours.

Thanks is owed to Tyrone GAA County board and Club Tyrone for their support, generosity and hospitality. We were privileged to avail of the incredible facilities in Garvaghey GAA Centre. Go raibh maith agaibh! A special mention to Gregory, Damien and Lauren for their unwavering support in the lead up to the event. They catered to our every need….and even sorted out the weather for us!

Many thanks to our generous lead sponsor O’Neills International Sportswear for the gear and much more!! We now know the answer to the age old question… “What’s the best thing since sliced bread?” It’s O’Neills thermal coats!!

Thanks to everyone who sponsored our players and donated to both charities. We can’t wait to reveal our final total! Stay tuned for more information.

Ní neart go cur le chéile!!

Go raibh míle maith agaibh go leir!

Bye for now,

A very appreciative, humbled and inspired Marathon Match Team
